Product Description:

From a young age, Wayuu women are immersed in the art of crochet, observing and learning from their mothers and grandmothers. This tradition is intensified during their formative years as they are secluded and taught not only crochet but also sewing, weaving, and cooking, among other skills. Wayuu women are renowned for their crochet expertise, often practicing their craft even while walking.

A cultural myth within the Wayuu community tells of a spider-like deity that imparted the knowledge of crochet to the Wayuu women. These vibrant and colorful Wayuu bags are more than just accessories; they are a narrative of the women's lives, symbolizing their journey from birth through the intricate designs that depict flora, fauna, celestial bodies, and tribal symbols. Each color woven into the bags holds deep significance—red for blood, blue for wisdom, yellow for happiness, beige for the earth, and greens, pinks, and oranges representing nature's bounty.

Handcrafted with synthetic fibers for durability, these unique, artisan Wayuu bags measure approximately 9 to 13 inches both in diameter and depth, with straps extending 32 to 40 inches. Perfectly sized for daily essentials, the bags comfortably rest on your hip, and their colorful, robust straps may stretch slightly with use, adapting to your lifestyle.

Purchasing these handmade crochet bags not only supports the economic sustainability of the Wayuu people but also aids in preserving their rich cultural heritage. A portion of the proceeds from each sale benefits the Wayuu Taya Foundation, helping to protect the Wayuu culture and provide essential resources to the community. Every $50 purchase assists in feeding five Wayuu children.

So beautiful!!!

This bag is simply gorgeous!!! So well made. The color is so cool, great for the summer. One thing though, the strap needs to be longer. The strap is very short. I'd definitely, definitely, definitely pay more for a longer strap. Stunning work.
